Data Engineer

Full-time · Amsterdam

The role

At Talpa eCommerce we're tackling the fast & exciting world of high-volume real-time auctions. We have ambitions to continue our international expansion and punch above our weight on the eCommerce scene. And for this we are looking for a pragmatic & experienced data engineer to join our Core Data team and help us drive these plans. How to do this, you ask?

Our current data stack is on-premise and built around a Postgres database. We are approaching the limits of this setup and our data users need to work around performance limitations in some use cases already. In the same time, our colleagues in back-end are moving our application to AWS, so the time has come to do the same for our data stack.

For this reason we started last year a data warehouse migration project to build a state-of-the-art, performant and reliable cloud data platform to replace our current setup. We are looking for a solid medior to senior data engineer to help us get there. We have started from a clean slate, and we have a dedicated team to maintain the current setup, so this role is exclusively about building the best possible data stack on AWS, making sure we are laying a solid foundation for our new data platform.

We are building our data platform using the following technologies:

  • Snowflake for DWH
  • Apache Kafka for events, possibly also AWS Kinesis (Data Firehose)
  • Apache Airflow for orchestration
  • dbt for defining and documenting our pipelines
  • Terraform for managing infra and DWH
  • Great expectations to have confidence in data quality
  • Also considering: AWS DMS or Airbyte to be used in ingestion and Liquibase for schema management
  • All code will be written in SQL or Python, and we use the usual developer tools: git, docker, bash, etc.

What are you bringing?

Must have:

  • Significant experience working within a cloud environment, preferably AWS (particularly with the services that provide: serverless computing, queue, notification and monitoring, ETL/ELT)
  • Snowflake’s hands-on experience or significant experience with its competitors + deep understanding of columnar databases)
  • Experience with Apache Kafka and Apache Kafka Connect
  • Significant SQL experience: CTE, window functions, deduplication of data, etc.
  • Deep understanding of the Infrastructure as a Code and hands-on experience with one of the tools, preferably Terraform
  • Eye for detail and high engineering standards

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, a nice person to work with

  • A team player, with the ability and drive to work together with other engineers, challenging each other for the best possible outcome

Good to have:

  • Knowledge of dbt
  • Solid foundations in the basics: SQL, Python, bash, docker, git, and common software development best practices
  • Strong experience building pipelines in Apache Airflow following best practices for the tool
  • Understanding most common data modeling concepts
  • Basic understanding of data storage and considerations when working with big data

A big extra plus, if you have any of:

  • DevOps experience
  • Experience in building and/ or maintaining streaming data applications/pipelines

  • Experience in architecting and/ or building a cloud data platform

  • A product mindset, ability to consider and collaborate with users and stakeholders
  • Business acumen, seeing beyond technology to understand how DWH users turn data into business value

What are we bringing?

  • Solid compensation
  • International environment with 24 nationalities in the Product & Tech department. We speak English when we don’t use GIFs to make a point

  • A great company culture where people are encouraged to speak their mind, strict no blame policy, "you build it, you own it" mentality. In general we strive to create a very safe, fair and warm environment.

  • Hackathons / Workshops/ Tech Demos / periodic feedback sessions / periodic employee surveys - all in the pursuit of better collaboration and continuous improvement

  • Weekly Bootcamps, Yoga classes. Friday afternoon drinks

  • Regular celebrations and parties.
